Skoda Superb review – MPG and running costs

Diesels are the real economy stars, but no Superb will cost too much to run

  • Well-balanced chassis and good powertrain calibration; it’s huge inside
  • Not as inexpensive as it once was

With the choice of engines available there’s a wide range of running costs, though even higher-performance models should prove relatively inexpensive to run.

For those wanting maximum bang for their petrol buck the plug-in hybrid does the numbers on paper, but is more variable in the real world. With a quite astonishing rating of 254.2mpg, keep close to a power point and the Superb can quite happily exist almost entirely on its 35-mile-or-so range. However, drive at motorway speeds or in inclement weather and this drops rapidly.

Traditional diesels will give you a more consistent result, ranging between 50 and 60mpg depending on the output and amount of driven wheels. Both lower-powered petrols hover in the 40s, but the 276bhp petrol will do more like low 30s thanks to the upsized turbocharger and standard-fit all-wheel drive.
