Maserati’s decision to only offer the Levante as a diesel model in the UK may not come as a surprise considering the tiny percentage of buyers who choose petrol power in this class. Despite this, it’s disappointing that the more athletic and characterful 3.0-litre V6 petrol isn’t available anyway.

The diesel and its 39.2mpg is about right for the class, falling short of class leaders, but not being totally left behind either. Despite Maserati’s adamant remarks of the diesel being engineered in Italy, we can’t help but notice the similarities between it and sister company Jeep’s use of a very similar unit in the Grand Cherokee.
