BBR launches latest tuning package for the Mazda MX-5

Tuning upgrades improve performance, with handling and braking packages also available

Anyone suspecting Mazda left something on the table with its latest MX-5 will be unsurprised to learn there’s clearly more potential in the 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that powers it.

BBR has been extracting this potential from MX-5s since the very first generation and has now announced a ‘Super 200’ package for the latest car that lifts peak power to 205bhp.

That’s an increase of 45bhp on BBR’s own dyno measurement of the standard car (slightly more than the 158bhp claimed by Mazda), while torque also increases to 179lb ft, from the standard 148lb ft. This drops the 0-60mph time from the standard 7.3sec to a claimed 5.65sec.

It’s not all top-end power either, since BBR claims torque improvements throughout the rev range, with as much as 30lb ft more than standard at 3500rpm. It’s said to be freer-revving too, spinning to a 7150rpm limiter.

The gains are achieved through use of new intake and exhaust camshafts with upgraded valve springs and retainers, a 4-into-1 stainless steel exhaust manifold, and a new cold air intake system. A StarChip ECU alters the fuel, ignition and cam timing to ensure the new parts all work in harmony.

Additionally, BBR can supply a Super 200+ package that lifts peak power to 214bhp and torque to 183lb ft, thanks to a 2.5-inch stainless steel exhaust centre section and a new silencer – available in either quiet or louder formats. Want more still? BBR can also supply a gas-flowed cylinder head for up to 225bhp.

The price for the Super 200 package comes in at £3354 (including VAT) including fitment (£1554 if you want to tackle it yourself), while the exhaust centre and silencer sections add £594 and £474 respectively. The gas-flowed head is priced on application.

That covers performance, but BBR also supplys and fits a sports supension package, with Koni adjustable dampers and BBR springs, for £1194 – the parts on their own are £834. Anti-roll bars, cutting down on the MX-5’s cornering lean, can be countered with an Eibach anti-roll bar kit for £374.70.

Brake upgrades are available too, with Willwood four-piston front calipers and high-performance pads, improving stopping performance and also shaving 2.1kg per side from the stock calipers. Stainless steel brake lines and high-performance fluid are also included. The cost is £834 fitted or £714 for a DIY version.
