Ford Ranger Wildtrak X and Tremor unveiled with off-road upgrades

The V6-engined Ranger Raptor may be stealing the limelight, but Ford has given the diesel Ford Ranger similarly beefy suspension hardware

The previous-generation Ranger Raptor was capable if uninspiring by virtue of its diesel engine, and Ford responded by lumping a 288bhp V6 petrol into the latest version. However, for those who need a more sensible dune-bashing pick-up (if there is such a thing), Ford has essentially revived the old recipe with two new special editions.

The Wildtrak X and Tremor models use the same 2-litre diesel four pot as the standard Ranger (and the old Raptor), with 202bhp and 369lb ft of torque from 1750rpm. A ten-speed automatic gearbox is standard fit, which delivers power to all four wheels. But while the powertrain is familiar, the chassis has been given a thorough overhaul with off-road driving in mind.

The changes centre around new Bilstein dampers, which pair with a 26mm ride height increase and 30mm wider tracks for more breadth over rough terrain. The power steering system has been uprated to suit, with a new steel bash plate protecting the underbody from knocks and scrapes.

Another key addition is brake-based torque vectoring to help rotate the Raptor on loose surfaces, which comes as standard on both the Wildtrak X and Tremor. There’s also a Trail Control system (essentially an off-road cruise control), which manages throttle and brake inputs to navigate difficult terrain at speeds below 20mph.

The two special editions are separated by their visual modifications, with the Wildtrak X gaining a black front fascia, rear bumper and matt black wheel arch extensions. The dark theme continues with the badges, Ford logo and 17-inch alloys.

In contrast, the Tremor gets glossy grey detailing on the bumpers and arches, with cast aluminium side steps and a silver sump guard.

Order books are open now for both models, with first deliveries expected in August this year.
