Renault Twingo details, prices and specs

Official prices, specs and details are announced for the new Renault Twingo city car

Renault has announced prices and specs for its new Twingo city car.

The new model is rear-engined and rear-wheel drive, and whilst Porsche 911-style performance can’t be expected, this setup should hopefully yield entertaining handling characteristics.

Renault has collaborated with Daimler to produce the new Twingo, with the latest Smart Forfour spun off the same platform. At launch, only three-cylinder petrol engines will be available, with a 69bhp 1-litre naturally aspirated unit and a more potent 89bhp 0.9-litre turbocharged option.

Most efficient is the less powerful engine with a stop/start system fitted; claimed fuel consumption is 67.3mpg, while 95g/km CO2 emissions currently ensure UK road tax is free. Performance is predictably restrained, with a 14.5sec 0-60 time and a 94mph top speed.

The turbocharged car knocks nearly three seconds off the sprint to 60mph, with a claimed 10.8sec ‘sprint’, while its top speed is 103mph. Renault is yet to commit to a proper Renaultsport variant, but we’re crossing our fingers one lies in the mk3 Twingo’s future.

There are three spec levels – Expression, Play and Dynamique. The entry level Expression starts at £9495, and while that’s more than a VW Up or Toyota Aygo, the Twingo comes with a relatively healthy equipment list, including power steering, electric windows, remote central locking, ESP and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The £500 upgrade to Play specification brings air conditioning with it, while Dynamique trim – which starts at £10,995 – includes alloy wheels, cruise control, start/stop and a variable power steering system which is said to improve maneuverability. The more powerful engine is a £700 option on Dynamique models.

The options list includes 16in alloys, part-leather seats, a folding fabric roof, parking sensors and satnav. And Renault is following in the footsteps of the Citroen DS range and the Vauxhall Adam by offering numerous personalisation options.

Order books are open now, with first deliveries in late September.
