Car pictures of the week
In this week’s car pictures, we gather a selection of models to discuss which are most likely to claim icon status in years to come
The word ‘icon’ is used a little too generously these days, but what exactly makes one? In this week’s evo car pics from issue 264, we round up a selection of models we feel might one day be worthy of icon status, and drive them back-to-back around Anglesey Circuit.
The icon title isn’t limited to multimillion-pound hypercars of years gone by, but, although not quite this simple, anything that left a mark on drivers at the time. For this reason, our collection of six potential ‘future icons’ is a varied bunch, ranging from the Audi A1 Quattro to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series and McLaren MP4-12C.

Starting with the smallest first, the A1 Quattro offers a very different experience to the one you get with the standard S1. As the name suggests, power goes to all four wheels, but comes from the same unit you’ll find in an S3 for a 253bhp power output. Though not a match for the 400bhp+ hot hatches of today, it’s still good for a spritely 5.7sec 0-62mph time and is more than enough to offer some B-road satisfaction.
Both the SLS Black Series and Aston Martin V12 Vantage represent the pinnacle of the naturally aspirated supercar era, sporting a 6.2litre V8 and 5.9-litre V12 respectively. Each was given a very different brief, however – one of absolute track focus and a disregard for everyday useability in the 622bhp SLS, and a blend of grand touring capabilities and outright driving thrills in the 510bhp Aston.
Which is most suitable for icon status? You’ll have to pick up your copy of evo issue 264 to find out...

The previous-generation Bentley Continental GT seemed to get better with age, a notion mirrored by the Jag E-type when in modern ‘lightweight’ form. Both of these British icons, as well as the Aston Martin Vantage GT12 feature in gallery three.
Fans might have cried fowl when Ferrari decided to turbocharge the Ferrari 488, but it’s not like Ferrari don’t have a history with turbocharged V8 engines.
